More Cats....Meow Meow Meow!!!

So far in my reading of Cat's Cradle I have come to realize that John/narrator expands more of his knowledge of his new found religion Bokononism. Each new person he interviews has a different point of view of Dr. Hoenikker and gives John more insight in his beliefs. Such as when he was talking to Miss Faust after the unpleasant interview with Dr. Breed and she stated how she doesn't "know whether [she] agrees or not. [She] just have trouble understanding how truth, all by itself, could be enough for a person"(54). This is referring to the point she makes after she states how Dr. Breed told her the main thing with Dr. Hoenikker was truth. People need the truth to feel more secure in life and like in postmodernism narratives guides people in life. How? This is because narratives tells you where you come from, how life began, and what is your purpose on Earth. It is a story that human beings want to hear because it it gives them some sense in life so that they can continue on living. Otherwise without myths and "truth" no one would really have any guidance towards existence.
In addition, what really captivated me was when Dr. Breed was talking about how Dr. Hoenniker was to create something that would freeze mud or stop it from destroying anything that gets in its path, and he mentions how there is a capsule called ice-nine that would freeze liquid substance in its way and wil eventually destroy the whole world. John takes this seriously and with the questions he continues to ask Dr. Breed about it being real, John pursues on to believing it exists even though the doctor had already explained to him that it doesn't. He creates a superstition for himself and takes into mind that Felix Hoenikker's three children has the ice-nine that "supposively" they splitted up right before their father died. This comes to show how anyone can make up something that is not true to make them feel satisfied with the fact that there is a possibility of having such a dangerous invention exist. So this can be an example of a myth and today in our world everything that we believe and have accomplished in life could all be lies in order for us to strive in society. We have no clue if GOD is real or not or how life began but we put this story behind it to give us some compassion and a direction to why we should be doing what we are doing now.

  2. Alright, so here’s the thing, I am super tired from the play and I do not know why I waited to the last minute to do this blog, probably because its online and I always forget to do it, but I apologize if it is the absolute worst comment you have ever gotten. I understand what you mean when you say that “People need the truth to feel more secure in life” but I also believe that many people make up lies to feel more secure. I think most people hide behind lies because they are either ashamed to show people who they really are or they are so insecure that they make up things to make them seem better, which would boost their self confidence making them more secure with who they are. I give props to your blog it was interesting and I definitely think you understand Cat’s Cradle. So, I just wanted to comment on that and give you my opinion! And, again, sorry about the bad comment!!
