Beware of Essay.....o_O

There are so many ideas to consider in the Brave New World. Such as the manipulation of the civilians in the World State, the advances of their technology, the use of SOMA, the different classes, the role of Bernard or John, and etc etc. Out of all of these, I would like to mostly emphasize on how technology came to be so important to the society since that is the key source of their "human" existence. Also I can maybe use the concept of how everyone is labeled and it creates this demanding community where you have to be this way or else you will be evicted from the World State, and this kind of shows how Bernard is an outcast and tries to find a way to fit in. It's crazy how they would use all these new machineries and drugs to "improve" humankind. What do I mean by improving humankind? I am expressing how they believe cloning people can increase the population and a better future because there will be no more worries of individuality and everyone will be the same. So we are like "robots" and that means it's more efficient for them to handle. Not only that but using SOMA can alter your mood swings from sad to happy, help enjoy yourself, and etc., but it can also kill you like any other drug(ecstasy). However, the people in charge do not want to tell you that because they believe human beings should be "used up until they wear out." This just comes to show that they compare humans to machinery and we are just easily disposable things, and in a society like that technology takes over emotions.
Here are two of my thesis ideas:
1. While the technology and science of the Brave New World progresses, it overrules the humans' true emotions, thoughts, and individuality.
2. The state of being different is outcast by the labels put upon each human being.

In order to expand my exploration of the novel I shall use texts from Shakespeare's poetry; which I can obtain in the Brave New World. Using Shakespeare's quotes will illuminate on real human emotions. Also, it is possible for me to benefit from Postmodernism and reveal how the myths and narratives can compare to the "idea" of believing in a society that was told to accept and follow. In addition, the book 1984 can definitely unfold how the Brave New World is similar to its' Big Brother community and could easily depict how technology alters us people in an influential civilization.

    :)

Your blogs was very similar to mine! I had many ideas just like you in what to write about. Umm infact i decided to write about technology and the society of Brave New World and how it takes an advantage of it. You kind of gave me an idea of what i might like to include in my essay. THANXS! :) Comparing the human beings to robots and how they are similar was a good point. I also liked how you compared the drug SOMA to ECSTASY and how both drugs can nearly kill you. "Used up until they wear out" nice use of quote.. can you image someone telling you to work until your nearly dead! It's funny... i also put using Shakespeare, Postmodernism, and 1984 texts to compare them with Brave New World to expand my "exploration!"
    Your thesis ideas was... :)

  2. Pam, you need to start typing these blogs way earlier than 3:00 in the morning! How did you even go to school alive with that amount of sleep? Anyways, I agree with your insight on the novel and believe that your essay topics will be great to write. With the manipulation of Brave New World’s society, their reliance on technology is so severe that life becomes dependent on it. Some points from the plot you can write about supporting this idea includes the falsified happiness created by the soma, the cloning of children with predestined futures, and the sleep teaching methods used on the youngsters. I also like your idea about the labels, which relates to the predestined future thing in a way. In their society, parallel to ours, it is hard for people to accept others for being “different.” But people who are psychologically different are seen as heretics and must be sent away in order to stop them from harming the others. This is pretty similar to the whole prop 8 deal that went through the California government a year ago. Conservatives were afraid that marriage between gays and their public show of affection would force schools to begin teaching about this marriage and cause their children to become gay themselves. This does not make much sense considering they are your beliefs and you are subjected to changes that you allow. I’m getting off topic. Anyways, good post. We had a lot of similar ideas, and hopefully you are going on the trip to Sacramento tomorrow!

  3. PAM!! So, I really liked your thesis, especially the first one. We had very similar ideas about how technology basically ruled the society and how no one was an individual because that’s how the government wanted it. Like Navdeep said, it was cool how you compared SOMA to ecstasy and how even though they were completely different, they both could kill you. I find it so interesting how you said that “they believe cloning people can increase the population and a better future because there will be no more worries of individuality and everyone will be the same”. It is weird to me that with everyone being the same they would have no worries. I believe that there would be more rebellion making their world more complicated and not worry free. Anyways, good job on your blog…. I agreed with pretty much everything and all your examples will be great to write about!!!
